Danny DeVito Career Beginnings
After attending boarding school, he earned his diploma in 1962 from Summit, New Jersey’s Oratory Preparatory School. He made his acting debut in high school, participating in productions of “The Billion Dollar Saint” and “St. Francis of Assisi.” He started working at his sister’s salon after high school, which he believed was an excellent way to meet girls. He chose to go to the more profitable field of cosmetics after working there for eighteen months.
This led him to apply to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he had to include a monologue in his application. He promptly changed his focus to acting at the school after hearing favorable comments about his monologue, and he graduated from the academy in 1966.
In Waterford, Connecticut, at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, DeVito made his acting debut with the Colonnades Theater Lab. Additionally, he made appearances in plays that the Westbeth Playwrights Feminist Collective created.
Danny DeVito Acting Career
With the 1975 release of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” DeVito transitioned from working in theater to working on screen. His performance in an off-Broadway adaptation of the book in 1971 served as a springboard for the movie part. The 1975 motion picture adaptation had great success and took home the five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Director, and Screenplay) in 1976.
Through his portrayal as taxi dispatcher Louie De Palma in the television series “Taxi” (1978–1983), DeVito rose to fame and continued to enjoy recognition and acclaim. In 1981, he won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe for his performance in “Taxi.”

After the conclusion of “Taxi,” DeVito went back to the screen, starring in films including Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns” (1992), “Terms of Endearment” (1983), “Romancing the Stone” (1984), “Ruthless People” (1986), “Twins” (1988) starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and “Other People’s Money” (1991).
