Tina Charles, the Phoenix Mercury’s centre, and the team have mutually agreed to end their relationship, according to a team announcement on Saturday.
Charles was named WNBA Most Valuable Player in 2012, and she led the Washington Mystics to the WNBA scoring title last season. Charles signed a free agent contract with the Phoenix Mercury on February 4.
During his time with the Phoenix Suns, Charles averaged 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
Charles played her final game with the team on Thursday, a loss to Minnesota. She scored 26 points in that game.
Mercury general manager Jim Pitman said in a statement that it was determined that it would be best for both parties to part ways at this time. “It was decided that it would be best to part ways at this time after discussions with Tina and her agent,” The fact that both internal and external factors contributed to our season not going as planned does not change the fact that we will continue to look for ways to improve.
The Phoenix Suns are 6-12 on the season and have lost three of their last four games.
Charles agreed to a one-year contract with the Mercury for a total of $108,000, which was considered a gross underpayment for the center’s services.
Charles, who is 33 years old, will now have to clear waivers in order to become a free agent. The continued detention of All-Star centre Brittney Griner in Russia complicates the Mercury’s roster even more.
The Phoenix Coyotes will play the Dallas Wings away from home on Saturday at 5 p.m.
