When he was 8 years old, his family moved to Oregon. He went to Thurston High School in Springfield, where he joined the wrestling team. In his senior year, he became the state champion in the 171 lb weight class.
Colby had plans to go to Arizona State University for college, but his test scores weren’t high enough. So, he went to Iowa Central Community College instead. There, he had a perfect 34-0 record and won the 165 lb national junior college wrestling title during his freshman year. He was roommates with Jon Jones, who later became a UFC champion.
Afterward, he transferred to the University of Iowa but got into trouble when he was arrested for DUI and eluding police in 2007. This led to a suspension from the wrestling team for a year. Colby admitted it was a low point in his life and something he regretted.
He eventually transferred to Oregon State University, where he did well in wrestling, qualifying for the NCAA tournament in his junior and senior years. In his senior year, he placed fifth and earned All-American honors. Colby also won the Pac-10 Conference twice at 174 pounds and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2011. Colby Covington started as a wrestler and was good at it. Then, he switched to MMA and won his first five fights. He joined the UFC in 2014 and won his debut fight against Anying Wang in the first round.
