From 2007 to 2011, he was also the 44th governor of Florida. Since 2012, Crist has been a part of the Democratic Party. He first ran for office as a Republican. In 2010, he became independent, and in 2012, he switched to the Democratic party.

Crist was in the Florida Senate from 1993 to 1999. In 1998, he ran against Bob Graham for the U.S. Senate but lost. From 2001 to 2003, he was the state’s Education Commissioner, and from 2003 to 2007, he was the state’s, Attorney General. In 2006, he was elected governor.

His father, Charles Joseph Crist, was an American doctor of Greek Cypriot and Lebanese ancestry, and his mother, Nancy (née Lee), was of Scots-Irish, Swiss, and Welsh ancestry. His family name comes from his Greek first name, which was “Christodoulos.” Crist moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, when he was a child.

There, he went to Riviera Middle School and St. Petersburg High School, where he graduated in 1974. He is the second of four children, and his three sisters are Margaret Crist Wood, Elizabeth Crist Hyden, and Catherine Crist Kennedy. For two years, he went to Wake Forest University. During his first and second years at Wake Forest, Crist was a walk-on quarterback for the Demon Deacons.

After that, he moved to Florida State University in Tallahassee. Crist got his bachelor’s degree from Florida State, where he was also elected vice president of the student body and joined the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Crist married Amanda Morrow in July 1979. They split up in less than a year.

After dating for nine months, Crist proposed to Carole Rome on July 3, 2008. They got married on December 12, 2008, at the First Methodist Church of St. Petersburg, where Crist is a member.

Crist said he was getting a divorce in February 2017, and the divorce was finalized that same year.  Crist said he was engaged to a woman he met in 2017 and who has six children and works as a medical sonographer when he ran for governor again in 2022.

After graduating from Cumberland School of Law in 1981 and passing the bar on his third try, Crist was hired by Minor League Baseball, which was based in St. Petersburg, as its general counsel. Crist ran for public office for the first time in 1986, when he ran in the Republican primary for a state Senate seat in Pinellas County.

He had always been interested in politics. After losing in a runoff, Crist went into private practice with his brother-in-law in St. Petersburg, but he soon went back to politics as an aide on Connie Mack III’s successful 1988 campaign for the U.S. Senate.
