Brian Walsh, the Australian television legend who helped launch the careers of Kylie Minogue, Hugh Jackman, and Guy Pearce, has passed away at 67.
Walsh was one of the most influential creative leaders and trailblazers in Australian television over the past three decades and was most recently the executive director of the Foxtel Group.
His career began at ABC before he moved to Radio 2SM.
Walsh’s first job in TV was with Network Ten, where he helped get shows like Vietnam, The Bangkok Hilton, and Dirtwater Dynasty off the ground.
But the international success of Neighbours cemented Walsh’s place in Australian television history, with the iconic show launching the careers of numerous Australian stars.
Walsh was also the creative force behind another of Australian television’s most iconic moments: the Simply the Best Season Launch Featuring Tina Turner.
Walsh went on to work on several State of Origin and Grand Final Entertainment shows and events, in addition to being the publicist for massive Australian international concert tours, including those of Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Neil Diamond, Ricky Martin, and Barbra Streisand.
In 1995, he assisted in the launch of Foxtel, initially as a television director and later as head of the drama originals, including Wentworth, Deadline Gallipoli, and The Kettering Incident. “This Is A Very Difficult Day For The Foxtel Group Family, Australia’s Creative Community, And The Millions Of Australians Who Loved The Stories Brian Brought To Life On Television,” said Foxtel Group CEO Patrick Delany.
“The Australian creative community has lost a beloved figure with the passing of Brian.”

The Australian TV industry has lost a titan. Brian Walsh used his passion, imagination and showbiz flair to get Aussie audiences excited about everything from dramas like Vietnam, Neighbours and Wentworth to Rugby League. He spotted stars, he mentored, he lent an ear. It’s hard… https://t.co/of4fjYBKMc

Can’t believe it. Brian Walsh – a best friend & mentor – has died.
Much too young – was the happiest he had ever been.
Am in total shock. He was always interested, interesting & a constant voice of reason. The times we had: unforgettable.
RIP my dear friend.
