James Todd Smith, an American singer, has been a part of Selah, a band that performs contemporary Christian music, since its inception. He has been a part of the group ever since its inception in 1997.
Smith, the son of missionaries, grew up in Zaire, Africa, in a mansion built by his grandparents who had served in Africa since the 1930s. His grandfather was a dentist in the United States before moving to Zaire.
Smith’s dad was born in Africa but ended up in Detroit. Both of Smith’s grandparents died in Africa. Smith lost his family home in a fire when he was five years old. After the tragedy, his father felt compelled to devote his life to the African mission field.
Smith and his mother and three siblings left Detroit, Michigan, and moved to Africa so that Smith’s father might find better job prospects. For the next eight years, they called that place home. Smith claims he has always blindly trusted the Bible’s teachings.
Smith says his time spent as a missionary kid inspired him to pursue music. He said I started performing in front of audiences when I was three years old. My mom and dad are missionaries. The churches that had sponsored us had to be visited upon our return to the United States. That was a great place to get some practice in.

In April of 2008, they gave birth to another daughter, Audrey, but she died away from cardiac complications shortly after birth. Angie told her followers the terrible details in her message. She penned,
“This is Audrey, my youngest child. I want to tell you about the little one who altered the course of my life, just in case you haven’t heard this portion of the story before.
We decided to carry her as long as possible while knowing by the middle of the pregnancy that she would not live outside of my body. If she were still with us today, at the end of her 2-and-a-half-hour lifespan, she would be 12 years old.
