She explained, “I found out I was adopted as early as I could understand it. My mom struggled for several years trying to get pregnant and eventually they decided to go through the adoption process. I have the best family in the world. They’ve always supported me. When I was 21, I sat my parents down and told them to tell me any information they had on my birth mom. They told me her name was Amy Ross Lopez. She was a musician and she had passed away. I just wanted to know where I came from.”
The 25-year-old McKenna, who was born in Gilbert, Arizona, stated that singing is in her blood. Finding out that her birth mother was also a vocalist elucidated Breinholt’s lifelong love of singing. “It’s like finding a missing puzzle piece, finally understanding where it all began,” she says.
Breinholt told the court that over the summer, she had communicated with her birth family. While they conversed via FaceTime, Breinholt disclosed that they had arranged to meet in person three weeks after her American Idol audition.

Mckenna Breinholt’s Performance on “American Idol” Moves Judges to Tears
The 22nd season of “American Idol” debuted on February 18, 2024, and featured McKenna Breinholt’s emotional audition that brought the audience to tears. Her audition had such an emotional impact that the show’s producers decided to condense it into a four-and-a-half-minute clip that would operate as a sneak peek at the next season.

Judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie both commended the singer, citing her “signature, raspy” voice. Judge Katy Perry also applauded her. Bryan mentioned that you perform with a great deal of poise and control and do seem to have it all figured out.
Richie gushed about how much he was anticipating more Breinholt. Declaring, “I love exactly what you did,” he expressed his enjoyment of her voice. Dolly Parton referred to McKenna’s audition as “a blessing,” stating that she was grateful for the opportunity to sing it and that McKenna was fortunate to have her loved ones there.
